The Chicago Public Library continues its Celebrating Diversity campaign in March 2010, during Women’s History Month. As part of the celebration, the Library will present a variety of free programs and events illustrating the achievements and contributions of Women in Visual Arts.
The opening event for Women’s History Month features Tragedy to Triumph-The Story of Artemisia, on Thursday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m. at the Chicago Public Library Sulzer Regional Library, 4455 N. Lincoln Ave. This is a uniquely inspiring music/multimedia performance about 17th century Italian painter Artemisia Gentileschi. The contemporary piece features Linda M. Smith on vocals, guitar and piano; Eugenia Elliott on vocal harmony, flute and guitar; Katherine Hughes on vocal harmony and violin; and Robert Arendt on vocal harmony, electric bass and guitar Additional highlights from the Chicago Public Library’s 2010 Women’s History Month observance include:
- Women’s Collective Art Practice in Chicago: 1937 – 2007- Joanna Gardner-Huggett, associate professor of history of art and architecture at DePaul University leads this presentation.
- Art Tours of the Harold Washington Library Center- The tour focuses on the impressive collection of original art work on display throughout the central library building.
- Through the Eyes of Women: Famous Visual Artists- Storytellers Gwen Hilary and Enoch Williamson lead this discussion about female artists, sculptors, and photographers from all over the world.
- Celebration of Women through Chinese Traditional Song- East meets West in this musical event featuring singers from the DongFang Chinese Arts Performing Association.
- Meet Mary Cassatt: An American Artist- Storyteller Lynn Rymarz steps back in time to tell the story of American artist Mary Cassatt.
